History

The Children's Grief Education Association was founded in 2004 in Denver, Colorado to address the needs of children who cannot easily access help and to support the families and professionals who are in contact with the children every day.

Our Founders

Shane and Valerie Phillips

Shane Phillips knows the impact of loss all too well.  At 16, his parents and only sibling, Mindy, were killed in a plane crash.  His personal struggle has imbued him with fortitude and dedication to bringing support and encouragement to grieving children.  With Valerie by his side, Shane continues to reach out to others at every opportunity.

Don and Mary Lyles

Don Lyles, M.Div., BCC, a clergyman for over 40 years, now serves as staff chaplain for St. Anthony Hospitals, where he provides pastoral counsel and support to those impacted by illness, trauma and death.  Mary Lyles, MSW, LCSW, provides passion and resources to CGEA from her personal losses and 10 years experience in nonprofit management, training and therapeutic care with bereaved children and families.  Mary has served over 1,000 grieving children and their families.
