The Lighthouse for grieving children and their families

 

There are times when loss can be overwhelming.  Several things can make a loss very difficult to deal with.  Here are just a few of them:

• Relationship to the one who is gone
• Events surrounding the death or incarceration
• Personal trauma
• Multiple losses at once or over time
• Age when loved one died
• Lifestyle changes

The Lighthouse is a special place in Denver where children and families who have lost a loved one to death or incarceration can go for individual and family counseling.  Grief and trauma therapists with a master’s degree in the mental health field provide the support.  Our four therapists have a combined 25 years of experience.  Master’s level interns from the University of Denver’s Graduate School of Social Work will begin providing services in the fall of 2006. 

For Children

Children often express their feelings through actions during play rather than words.  The Lighthouse offers many opportunities for children to share their feelings safely.  We offer play therapy, art therapy, sand tray therapy, filial therapy, EMDR and supportive therapy. 

 For Teens

Teens will find a safe place to share their thoughts and concerns about the loss and changes in their life and relationships.  Our therapists provide respectful, confidential support as teens adjust to major losses.

For Adult Family Members

When a death or incarceration loss occurs, it affects the entire family.  Adults will find The Lighthouse a safe haven for support as they work on helping their children as well as taking care of their own feelings of grief.  Adults will also find guidance for assisting their grieving children.

Eligibility

The mission of our organization is to support grieving children in several ways.  Families with children who are significantly impacted by the incarceration or death of a loved one are eligible for services.  Due to the high demand for services, families may be placed on a waiting list. The Lighthouse reserves the right to refer individuals and families to other community resources.

Cost

No one is turned away because of inability to pay.  The Lighthouse has a sliding scale fee based on income and number of family members.  We do not currently accept insurance, but are working toward doing so.

The Lighthouse is located at 2379 S. High Street, Denver, Colorado  80210.

It is 3 blocks south of Iliff, near the southwest corner of Wesley and HIgh.  Meetings are by appointment only, so contact us by phone.
